The first time can be a real scare
The first time you have your period can be confusing and embarrassing. It can even be scary. It’s normal to feel that way. The great thing is, there’s someone very close to you that has already gone through it. Someone that can answer your questions. Your mother (or another trusted older woman).
We understand you might be shy talking about this. So we’ve put together 5 questions to help you get started.
Mama might say: It is just a sign that you are growing up. And that every month your uterus (also called the womb - this sits near your stomach) will shed it’s lining. That lining is the blood that comes out of your vagina during your period.
Mama might say: You need to use a sanitary pad or period cloth. These should be changed regularly like every 4-6 hours and try to take a bath at least twice a day
Mama might say: It normally would last 3- 5 days , but for some girls it can be up to 7 days.
Mama might say: You might feel some cramps around your stomach area, and you may get some pimples on your face, a mood change and craving certain foods are also normal
Mama might say: As long as you have proper protection you can can carry on with your activities as normal.
We know you will probably have a lot more questions. These are just some ways to start the conversation with your mum (or a trusted older woman).

Hey Ineyj , thanks for the question. What you see on your pants is called vaginal discharge. There are different colors/types and they vary during your menstrual cycle. White - this is common at the beginning & end of your cycle. Clear & stretchy - this is also called "fertile" discharge and it indicates that you are ovulating. Clear & watery - this does not come at a particular time. It can show up at any time in your cycle. Yellow or Green - This indicates an infection. Brown - may happen after your period and this is known to clean out the vagina. It looks brown because old blood looks brown. The only time you should be worried about a discharge is if it green or yellow in color, if its clumpy like cheese, if it has a bad odour, rashes, swelling or if it itches. If you experience any of these odd symptoms, please talk to a trusted adult about it and see a doctor. We hope this helps.

Hey Toppy! Menstruation (a period) is a major stage of puberty in girls. It's one of the many physical signs that a girl is turning into a woman. A period is the 2 to 7 days (depending on individual) that a girl or woman experiences menstrual flow — blood and tissue that leaves the body through the vagina. The blood and tissue leaves the body because it's no longer needed. It comes from the uterus (womb), the organ inside a woman's body where a baby grows. Each month, blood and tissue builds up in the uterus in case the woman becomes pregnant. That lining would be needed if the woman's egg was fertilized by a man's sperm cell. A fertilized egg attaches to that lining and begins growing into a baby. But most of the time, the egg does not get fertilized so the lining is shed, and the girl or woman has her period. This cycle happens almost every month for several more decades (except, of course, when a female is pregnant) until a woman reaches menopause and no longer releases eggs from her ovaries. Some of the signs include; irritability, mood swings, minor headaches, stomach aches, cramps in stomach, legs, or back, changes in appetite, cravings for particular tastes or foods, acne outbreaks, tender breasts, feeling tired or sleepy, back or shoulder pains. The best way however is to keep track of your period using a calendar. This was, you don't get caught unawares. Hey Angella! Thanks for this question. You first of all, you should always be prepared for your period so that you do not get caught unawares (always have sanitary pad in your school bag). In a case when your period starts in class, look for a sweater or a scarf to cover your waist and then excuse yourself from the class, go to the restroom and clean up (make sure you wait till your skirt is properly dried). Blood is meant to be red but when it stays in the pad for too long, it tends to become brownish. Please change your pad often (every 3-4 hours or more if your period is heavy). But there is absolutely nothing wrong with cramps except if it is extreme and the person cannot do anything at all. It is at that point we advise that the person sees a doctor. In calculating your period/menstrual circle, note that the first day of your period is also the first day of your menstrual circle and the last day of your period is not the last day of your circle but the last day of your period. The duration/flow depends on the individual. The last day of your cycle is the day before your next period starts. For example, if your period started on the 1st of April and your next period starts on the 3rd of May, your cycle will be 2nd of May. This means that your cycle lasts for 31 days. Your new cycle starts again from the 1st day of your next period. Please note that your period can be delayed at sometimes and can also come earlier than normal. We hope this helps.

What you need to do is to track your period using a calendar to know how long your cycle is. Please note that menstrual cycles last from 21 -35 days depending on the individual.
