How to make friends

Toyin tells us how she made friends

How to make friends

My name is Toyin. I am 15 years old.

I lost my dad a year ago.To support the family I spend most of my time helping my mum at her shop.

I also attend a cake baking class twice a week.

I barely have time to do anything for myself. At times I feel like I don’t have any friends. I am too shy to approach people.

Recently I went over to my cousin’s house. She was gisting with her friends when I walked in. They seemed very close. They have been friends for years.

This made me wonder if I will ever be able to make friends like this.

I asked her how she was able to make friends like this.

She had some really great advice. She told me to work on my shyness.

Then she gave me a task and some advice. She said

“Pick someone your age in your baking class and start a conversation. You can start by introducing yourself. Ask them about their day. Ask how they are enjoying the class. Say stuff like “What are your plans after this training? I want to start a small business what about you?” Try this every day with different people. If someone your age comes to the shop. Be friendly. You can gist with her about trending music videos and songs.
But be careful. Not everyone is safe to be friends with.

When picking who to talk to try to pick someone your age. Talk to them in an open space. Avoid quiet places or somewhere that makes you uncomfortable.

I tried what my cousin suggested almost every day. I noticed one of the girls in my class became friendly. Sometimes she stops by my seat to gist with me.

Some days we chat with each other on Facebook.

I am so happy to finally have a friend. I hope to make more friends.
