Think you don't have someone to talk to?

There are adults you can trust

Your thoughts (17)

My name is Sade. I am 13. My parents live in Osun State. They could not take care of me and my 4 brothers. So I came to live with my aunty and uncle in Lagos. I’ve been here since June last year. I was very lonely when I first came to Lagos.

My aunty and uncle have three big sons. My aunty travels a lot for her business. So I wasn’t very close to her. I felt I had no one to talk to. When I started my period last month, I didn’t know who to tell.

Then I met Rita! She came to my school last term and she became my seat partner. I was so happy. She’s really nice and also brilliant. I tell her everything. Even when I have problems with boys in school.

Since we are the same age, Rita said she can’t help me all the time. She said I need an older person to talk to. She said I should talk to my aunty. That just because my aunty travels does not mean we can’t be close. I was a little scared, but I told my aunty about my period last week. She was great! She told me all about what was happening with my body. Even some stuff Rita did not know!!

Rita showed me that I don’t have to be scared to share my problems. Even if my aunty is away, I can now talk to the guidance counselor at our school. I have found people I can trust. Even my big cousin, Brother Mark. Sometimes, I go to him for advice about boys.

Now I know I shouldn’t keep quiet if something is wrong. If I have a problem or am scared, there are people who can help me.

Hey Angelica22! You can still be close to your Aunt. All you need to do is to talk to her. You can start by talking about random things i.e. school, friends, things you like etc. You can also ask her about her day and also her interests. It can be easy when you both talk about things that interest you. This is a starting point so please do not be scared of her. We wish you all the best and we hope this helps.

My sisters always scare me away.

Hey Jasmine! Awwww… so sorry to hear about this. Have you tried talking to them? They are probably not scaring you away intentionally. Tell them how you feel (politely and without anger in your tone) and you may be surprised to see that they are not treating you badly intentionally. We wish you all the best and we hope this helps.

I tink I'm lucky cuz my mum n older siblings re always eager for me to talk to dem

Hey Ammynart! We totally understand how you feel and what you are going through. The truth is talking to someone alone is a very good form of therapy. You will definitely feel lighter and better when you talk about somethings you are going through. Holding and keeping everything to yourself can even make you feel depressed. If you feel like you can't talk, you can write it out and give it to the person you want to talk to. That is another easy way if you don't think you can talk. Do not worry about what people will say because that alone can stop you from doing a lot of things in life.

Hey Ewaola! Thanks for opening up through this comment. If you cannot tell your mum, you can talk to another adult around you that you trust. Of course, you can share it with us but we still want you to have someone around you that you can talk to okay? We hope this helps

Hey Springster! Thanks for opening up through this comment. We are so sorry about what you are going through with your mum. Have you tried talking to your mum about how she treats you? We suggest you do so that she knows that what she does affects you to a large extent. If you do not feel confident enough to talk to her, you can write a letter to her. Please, also try to make friends for companionship. Remember the way to get a good friend is to be a good person. Smile more, say hi to people when you see them and most importantly, be real. We wish you all the best and we hope this helps.
