A guide to your period
Your period, Mary J, monthly visitor, menstruation. Whatever you call it, most of us have to deal with it every month. And it can be a little confusing. We may not understand exactly what is happening. So here’s what you need to know.
WHEN DOES IT START?
Most girls see their period between ages 10 – 12. Some get it much later even as late as age 16.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
For most of us 3-5 days. But it can last as long as 7 days. If your period lasts longer than this you should see a doctor or tell a trusted adult as this is could be sign of something wrong.
WHY THE PAIN?
Every month your body gets ready to carry a child.
It does this by thickening the walls of your uterus.
Then it releases an egg. When the egg is not fertilized, that lining sheds.
This is what causes the bleeding.
The pain comes because sometimes your uterus contracts when it sheds the lining.
It is absolutely normal to experience some pain.
HOW CAN I DEAL WITH THE PAIN?
You can try exercise. A gentle walk sometimes works. Hot drinks, like milk, can also help You can also take a warm bath or put a warm towel on the hurting area,. Try lying down for a while. For some girls the pain is so bad, it stop them from doing everyday activities. If this is case, you can visit a clinic to get medication.
CAN I GET PREGNANT DURING MY PERIOD?
Yes, you can totally get pregnant. It is possible to experience ovulation before or even during period. If a sperm comes in contact with an egg at a time like this you can get pregnant.
CAN MY PERIOD CAUSE A SHORTAGE OF BLOOD?
A normal period is around 3 table spoons of blood. That’s not enough blood to put you in any danger.
DOES MY PERIOD PREVENT ME FROM CARRYING DOING NORMAL ACTIVITIES?
The answer is no. Your period is not an illness. When it comes you can still do the normal things you enjoy doing. Go to school, go to the market, ride a bicycle, run, jump, even dance.
DOES MY PERIOD MAKE ME UNCLEAN?
Your period is absolutely normal. Every girl experiences it. Some religious and cultural believes exempt girls from participating in certain activities during their period. However, this doesn’t make you unclean. It is not something to be embarrassed about.

Hey Dhebhorah! Menstrual flow is not meant to smell. What smells most of the time is the sanitary pad you have had on for too long. The reason why it smells is that of the blood trapped in the pad which is not meant to stay in for too long. Try changing your pad regularly when you are on your period and always stay clean. Hey Dellyqueen01! Thanks for this question. Periods are different for everyone. You may have a very heavy flow while a friend or sibling may have very light flow. These are the various signs and symptoms of periods and it is normal. Having lighter flow or heavier flow does not make you better than others. Just be sure to have enough sanitary pads available. Hey Taby! Some people naturally do not have heavy flow. We do not know for sure if you are like that so we suggest you try eating more fruits and vegetables, drink enough water, cut down on sweet and biscuits (sugary things) etc. These may help increase your menstrual flow. We hope this helps.

What your friend needs to do is to calculate the number of days in her cycle and not how many times she sees her period in a month. Hey Debbie! There is nothing wrong with that and you shouldn't be afraid. When we say monthly cycle, what we mean is either 28 days or 30 days (depending on your cycle). It does not have to start on the 1st of the month and end on the last day. It can start at the end of the month but as long as it lasts up to 28 or 30 days as the case may be with your menstrual cycle, that is all that matters. What you need to do is to track your period using a calendar to know how long your cycle is. Please note that menstrual cycles last from 21 -35 days depending on the individual. Also, there is nothing you can do to make your period come out faster. We hope this helps.

Hey Kali! When you get your period and you're caught unprepared, using toilet paper in place of a pad is okay, but it's not a good idea to use tissue all through your period. If you notice, tissue gets weak and tends to tear up when it gets soaked. Leaving this in your vagina can cause the particles of the tissue to remain there especially if you don't clean properly. This can cause infections. Also, the particles also tend to remain on your panties. We hope this helps.

Hey Yemi! Normal discharge is either white, clear & stretchy or clear & watery. The only time you should be worried about a discharge is if it green or yellow in colour, if its clumpy like cheese, if it has a bad odour, rashes, swelling or if it itches. We hope this helps.

In calculating your period/menstrual circle, note that the first day of your period is also the first day of your menstrual circle and the last day of your period is not the last day of your circle but the last day of your period. The duration/flow depends on the individual. The last day of your cycle is the day before your next period starts. For example, if your period started on the 1st of April and your next period starts on the 3rd of May, your cycle will be 2nd of May. This means that your cycle lasts for 31 days. Your new cycle starts again from the 1st day of your next period. Please note that your period can be delayed at sometimes and can also come earlier than normal. We hope this helps.

To avoid getting stained, just be sure to wear your sanitary pad properly, have some extras pads and change every 3-4 hours (this depends on your flow). Hey Tkgirl! The whitish thing you see is called vaginal discharge and it is not just whitish, there are other colors and feels that occur at different times in your menstrual cycle. It could be clear, milky or stretchy depending on your cycle. The only time you should be worried about a discharge is if it green or yellow in colour, if its clumpy like cheese, if it has a bad odour, rashes, swelling or if it itches. Seeing a discharge does not necessarily mean that your period is coming soon. We hope this helps.

Hey Eni115_! Getting stained is not meant to be a trend when you are on your period. It happens for different reasons; the pad is not properly placed, the pad is full and not changed on time, the pad shifts when you sit etc. These and so many other reasons can make you get stained when on your period. You can avoid getting stained by changing your pad at least 6 hours (depending on how heavy your flow is), being careful when you sit down and place your pad properly etc. We hope this helps
