Tips to ward off danger

Your thoughts (12)

We’ve all had that feeling. The one you get when you’re walking down the street alone. It never takes long for the sounds to come – a catcall, a whistle, a rude comment. Sometimes you walk faster or run. Other times, you go back home.

As teenagers, we face all kinds of creepy situations every day. For all of us, it’s important to keep safe and be happy. The tips below can help. Let’s get started.

Don’t Stand in Corners Alone
In public places, avoid staying in hidden corners all by yourself. Stay out in the open. Sit in spots that are brightly lit and filled with people.

Hang Out in Groups
Whenever you go out, it’s best to be in a group of trusted friends. There’s safety in numbers.

Never Leave Home Without Telling Someone
Before leaving home, make sure someone knows where you’re going. Leave an address or a phone number if you can.

Learn to Say No
Don’t be afraid to turn down unwanted advances. If someone wants you to do something that makes you uncomfortable, just say no.

No Secrets: Report Suspicious Behaviour
Trust your instincts. If a person or a situation feels wrong, you’re probably right.

Is someone abusing you? Tell a trusted adult so they can help.

You can also get help by calling an organization called Education as a Vaccine that runs a helpline you can call to find out everything you need to know about health issues, including menstruation and pregnancy. The number is 08027192781 and its free to call from Airtel and open Monday to Friday from 9 till 5. It is completely confidential so you don’t need to give your name or details. You can just ask questions and get the support you need .

Hey Immaculate! So sorry to hear this. Have you tried talking to them to let them know how you feel? Sometimes, we need to let people know how they treat us if we really want them to change. So please tell them how they make you feel and ask them why they are treating you the way they do. Please, do not do this with bitterness or anger. We wish you all the best and we hope this helps.

please do tell them it will help you, wish you all the best...

i have't come to open up to anyone since this happened.i guess this platform is like a therapy for me....am a male.i was molested by our flat mate, his name was abraham.he was 18 to 19 and i was around 5 to 6 years i guess, dad use 2 work late and his parents were't always at home. i did't even know what it was at that time, i was still innocent and i did't know d meaning of sex,and all that. we later parted ways but after six years later all the trumas kept rushing back like adreneline. he molested me even when he knew we were same sex.....up till this day, i have been fantasizing on different ways to kill him. but its all in the past. i wasnt able to say no cause i was young,i cant change what happened but i can prevent it from happening to anyones kid again.i want to set up a platform where all kids thats been molested or is about to be,can seek refuge and assistance.... dont be silent speak out! when u dont like how he/she is talking, looking or touching you.it might be ur dad, uncle, brother, naigbour friends

Hey kassidy! Thanks a lot for sharing this with us. We are sure that it would have been very hard for you to keep such a huge thing secret. We are glad that you have finally spoken up and we sure it feels a bit better. However, we feel like you should talk to a professional body about this. They will help and guide you on what to do with in your next phase and also totally help you get over it. There is a Child Advocacy Center where they help and give professional advice to young people in situations like this on what they can do to be safe. You can call them on 08 00 80 080 01. This service is completely confidential - which means they won't share what you say to them with other people. It is free which means you don’t not need to have credit before you call them. We hope this helps

Kassidy am very, very, sorry for all you went through and especially when all this feelings start reflecting back am sorry I hope all this feelings of blaming yourself will come to an end so that you start having good feelings an not feelings of regrets I wish you prayers will come to pass of you creating a platform that you said you will create for kids that has been molested and to avoid molesty .
