Can I get pregnant?

What you need to know

Can I get pregnant?

Dear Big Sister,

I am 15 years old with a boyfriend who is 17 years old. We have decided not to wait anymore. But I am scared of getting pregnant. When I was younger my mum told me just hugging a boy can get me pregnant. But my boyfriend says I can’t get pregnant at this age. Do you think I can get pregnant at this age?

Your confused baby sister

Dear Baby Sister,

Honestly if you are sexually active, and have started seeing your period you can get pregnant.

No one gets pregnant from hugging. To learn more on how pregnancy really happens click here to find out

But pregnancy is not the only thing you need to consider.

If you are having sex you need to also think about sexually transmitted infections.

Sexually transmitted infections are infections you can get by having sex with someone who has an infection.

Infections like herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, and even HIV can all be transmitted when you have unprotected sex.

Having sex is a big deal. You need to think about it carefully. It can lead to health issues if your sexual organs are not fully developed.

It also comes with a lot of emotional stuff. Are you ready for the emotional attachment that comes with sex?

Then there is the risk of getting infected or pregnant. This is why you need to think of safety (protected sex) first.

This means insisting your partner wears protection like a condom.

You also have the option of visiting a health center with your partner or a trusted adult like your older sister, cousin or aunt to talk to a health personnel on protection options.

But you know these options are not 100% reliable. The only 100% reliable option is to abstain from sex.

At the end of the day only you have the power to choose what options best suit you If you are ready to take this step. But when deciding we want you to think of safety first.

Your lovely,

Big Sister
