My eyebrows meet in the middle

My thick eyebrows never bothered me when I was little. But after I turned 14, I couldn’t look in the mirror without hating them.

Thing is, when I hit puberty, my body went through serious changes – some I wasn’t so happy about. For instance, I liked that I had breasts and pubic hair; but I didn’t like that my eyebrows met in the middle, right above my nose. It didn’t help that some kids at school started calling me a hairy caterpillar. It really sucked.

I was desperate to get rid of my thick eyebrows, so I asked my mum for advice. She explained that puberty is a time when our bodies go through many physical and emotional changes. She said it can be a rollercoaster, but we just have to hold on and get through it. She told me hormones are special chemicals in our bodies that send messages to control our bodily functions – like hunger and emotions. When we girls go through puberty, our bodies release a hormone called estrogen; while in boys, the hormone released is called testosterone.

Also, my mum explained that we are different, which means we react differently to our hormones. Some of us get pimples, experience mood swings, or grow facial hair (like me!). She added that if we did something dramatic while our bodies were still changing, we might regret it later.

I admitted that I was feeling insecure because of the constant teasing in school. My mum said there was nothing weird about having eyebrows that met in the middle. She told me it was called a “unibrow.” Afterwards, we went online and googled unibrows. We saw many pictures of people with unibrows, including Frida Kahlo, the iconic Mexican artist. I was shocked to see her rocking her unibrow with pride. And she was totally gorgeous! My mum made me look in the mirror and say aloud, “I am beautiful just the way I am,” over and over again. It helped me feel sooo good about myself.

Now I chant this mantra every morning when I’m getting ready for school. I have never felt more beautiful and more confident. I know for sure that my unibrow is stunning. Because it’s one of the things that makes me unique.
