Three dos and don’ts during your period

It’s that time of the month again

Your thoughts (122)

Periods. They come and go, don’t they? Only that sometimes when they come around, you don’t really know what to do. Then things get pretty awkward.

However, periods can be easier when you know exactly what to do. Here are three tips to guide you:

Don’t: Eat fatty, salty and sugary foods
They’re known to increase fatigue, bloating, anxiety and mood swings. They can make your breasts super tender too. One more thing to avoid? Dairy products. Milk is calcium-rich and nutritious. But it isn’t your friend during your period because it increases gas and cramps. So it’s best to stay off milk until your period is over. Yes, avoiding some of these foods is easier said than done — especially if you like them. But you can do it.

Do: Eat fish, vegetables and fresh fruits
They’ll boost your mood and improve your health. Drink a cup of hot tea with ginger and/or honey as well. It helps reduce menstrual cramps. If you have heavy flow, eat foods that contain iron like beans, eggs, ugu and unripe plantain to reduce the risk of anaemia. (A condition where you have fewer red blood cells than normal.) Also, drink lots of water to stay well-hydrated.

Don’t: Wear white clothing
If you’re prone to getting stained during your period, avoid white/brightly-coloured clothing. That way, you won’t need to check your backside every minute. You deserve peace of mind during your period.

Do: Wear dark-coloured clothing.
It’ll calm your nerves and boost your confidence. And if you get stained, nobody else will notice. Then you can sneak off and change your clothes if necessary.

Don’t: Skip exercise
No matter how tempting your bed is, don’t just lie there. There are easy workout moves that can make you feel better. Which brings us to….

Do: Simple exercises like stretching and walking

They reduce anxiety, fatigue and menstrual cramps. So they’ll do your body a whole lot of good. Get up and get moving, girl.

Remember, you’re not protected from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDS) even during your period. Any questions? Talk to a trusted adult like an older sister, an aunt, or an experienced health professional.

Please senior sister as a senior girl child after my period when is it safe for me to have unprotected sex

March 20, 2022, 7:58 p.m.

Latest Reply

No it is dangerous as the first child your younger ones would want to copy you and it would be disastrous and cause your family shame so be careful and make a wise decision.

After marriage that is only right time to have sex.

Hey benedict! Thanks for the comment. Unprotected sex is never advisable because there is not a safe time not to get an STD/STI or HIV. You need to always protect yourself. If you want to avoid pregnancy, the safest way is to abstain. Condoms are safe but they are not 100% safe. Please, if you must have sex, always use a condom. We hope this helps

Aunty my sister told me to use pad while seeing my vagina discharge it comes at a certain date and it really pains like you said our body are different is it my period?

March 20, 2022, 7:57 p.m.

Latest Reply

Hey Rejoicequeeneth! Thanks for the comment. Does this vaginal discharge come once a month? Does it come out in form of blood? Vaginal discharge comes at different times in the month and there are different colors and textures (clear, stretchy, egg white etc) while your period brings out blood. If it is blood you see, it is your period and you should use a pad. If it vaginal discharge (as explained earlier), you do not need to use a pad. Please talk to a trusted adult for guidance. We hope this helps

Big sis is it advisable to swim while meastrating

I hate my period it makes me angry because it's too painful and if I use drugs I'd consume about a satchet and half of any mensural pain killers.which I don't think it's healthy or maybe I have mensuralophobia if that even exists.😣😣🤕☹️😤😤😠😠😾

Am new here i hate my period cos of smelling

March 20, 2022, 7:57 p.m.

Latest Reply

Hey Salma! Menstrual flow is not meant to smell. What smells most of the time is the sanitary pad you have had on for too long. The reason why it smells is because of the blood trapped in the pad which is not meant to stay in for too long. Try changing your pad regularly when you are on your period and always stay clean. We hope this helps.

Hey donann1! Thanks for the comment. It is normal for every girl to see her period so it should not be something to be ashamed of. There is nothing wrong with them knowing that you are on your period. It is something that completes you so do not be shy okay? The only way you can swim when you are on your period is when you use tampons but please note that they can be uncomfortable when you use them the first few times. Some people do not even like the idea of using a tampon so be sure that you do not have a problem with this. We also suggest that you and your friends select another form of fun ways to hang out that do not stop any of you from joining when it is that time of the month. We hope this helps

Big sis when I started menstruating it was very painful like de pains comes every month BT now, de pains usually come once in a while My frnds tld mhe dat having sex reduces menstrual pain What do I do???

March 20, 2022, 7:57 p.m.

Hey Nize! That is not true!!! Sex does not reduce menstrual pains at all neither does pregnancy nor childbirth. That is a myth and it doesn't work that way. You can try any of these easy solutions to stop the pains; have a hot bath, place a hot water bottle on your tummy, take a walk or take some pain killers as prescribed by a doctor or certified pharmacist. However, if the pain persists, please talk to a trusted adult and see a doctor. We hope this helps.

Ma when I start my period. It normally last for four days for dat month, still that same month I experience another one . Why?

March 20, 2022, 7:57 p.m.

Latest Reply

Hey iyanuoluwa! Thanks for the comment. When we say monthly cycle, what we mean is either 28 days or 30 days (depending on your cycle). It does not have to start on the 1st of the month and end on the last day. It can start at the end of the month but as long as it lasts up to 28 or 30 days as the case may be with your menstrual cycle, that is all that matters. What you need to do is to track your period using a calendar to know how long your cycle is. Please note that menstrual cycles last from 21 -35 days depending on the individual. We hope this helps.

Do:you can have fun with you friend don't:avoid sexual intercourse,it irritating and not advisable

Hey Khloe! Thanks for the comment. It is good to be observant at every point and we are glad you noticed this. Every girl has different signs and symptoms when she gets her period. Hey 2006! Yes, it is normal for you to feel reluctant to talk to people when you are on your period. We usually have mood swings and it tends to affect us. This is a hormonal thing. As for your menstrual cycle, it happens sometimes and we advise you to monitor your period for 3 months (please do not count based on dates but know how many days are in your cycle). We hope this helps

Hey mary! Thanks for the comment. They are both different things but are born out of a similar process. Ovulation is the process where the eggs are produced in the ovaries while menstruation is the process where the unfertilized eggs (from ovulation) and the uterus lining sheds thus causing blood to come out of the vagina. We hope this helps

Hey Meg! Thanks for the comment. In calculating your period/menstrual circle, note that the first day of your period is also the first day of your menstrual circle and the last day of your period is not the last day of your circle but the last day of your period. The duration/flow depends on the individual. The last day of your cycle is the day before your next period starts. For example, if your period started on the 1st of April and your next period starts on the 3rd of May, your cycle will be 2nd of May. This means that your cycle lasts for 31 days. Your new cycle starts again from the 1st day of your next period. Please note that your period can be delayed at sometimes and can also come earlier than normal. We hope this helps.

Dear big sis, for how long should i wear a pad before changing it?

March 20, 2022, 7:56 p.m.

Latest Reply

Hey Springster! Thanks for the comment. You should change your pad at least every 4 hours. Please note that you are meant to change your pad more often than this if you have a heavy flow. We hope this helps

please sister, what kind of pad can you wear when you have heavy flow .cos there are some kind like that but I know none

@bessy...yu can use the pink Always. That one is for heavy flows.. like my elder sister told me.

one of my friend said as she saw that whitish thing she said the next month of it she started her period and secondly this whitish thing is going to 3 month and the last of all is that i ask one adult in my community about the under of my stomach that is paining she said my body whats to ripe and that it is a sign of period

March 20, 2022, 7:56 p.m.

Latest Reply

Hey bella! Thanks for the comment. The whitish thing she sees is called vaginal discharge and it is not just whitish, there are other colors and feels that occur at different times in your menstrual cycle. It could be clear, milky or stretchy depending on your cycle. The only time you should be worried about a discharge is if it green or yellow in colour, if its clumpy like cheese, if it has a bad odour, rashes, swelling or if it itches. Seeing a discharge does not necessarily mean that your period is coming soon. We hope this helps.

hi big sister, what are the signs you see when I am about to start menstruating. because I have been seeing the vagina discharge.

Breast tenderness.. some people may have this signs while some don't have the signs.... Girls that have menstrual cramp usually feel a bit pain on the lower abdomen..... But still yet the only thing you need to know when your period is about to come out it's time... Try and track your cycle and know when it's supposed to come out if you can't do it get an application on play store to help you track it.....

Hey olivia! Thanks for the comment. Some people see their periods twice a month because menstrual circle is from 21 days to 35 days (depending on the individual). Some also get their periods 13 times a month instead of the regular 12 times (once a month). There are various reasons for irregular periods as it is called but we suggest you talk to a trusted adult and see a doctor about this. We hope this helps.
