Learning when to spend and save
Sometimes It’s hard to say no to spending when my friend Ada wants us to buy a yummy snack or when the perfect shoe I have had my eye on is now at a reduced price.
I know people say there’s nothing wrong with spoiling yourself every now and then. But it is important to understand that spoiling oneself now may mean I will miss out on something even better later.
So how do I know what’s worth spending on?
Before spending I have to ask myself if I really need or if I can do without it. For example there are times where I feel like I must have a particular shoe I saw somewhere (especially when I have a special occasion coming up). But then I need to ask if it is a need or a want
Needs are the things we can’t do without – healthy food, shoes for school, medicine. Wants, well, they’re just that! They’re things we would like to have but can survive without.
My friend Ada calls her fashion buys like her new earrings an investment. But, are they really? Ada’s earrings look good today but may only last her a few months.
A good investment is something that will benefit you for many months to come.
The best kinds of investments are things that can change a life. Things like a computer training or tuition to study further. These are the things that we all probably have to save for.
So instead of buying something that’s hot this season but won’t be hot next season, save towards a need.
That means saying no to that fancy shoe, dress, or make-up kit today.
It will be worth the wait. You will be super proud of yourself when you can finally cash in and get your big dream!

Hey BARIER! Thanks for opening up through this comment. You should talk to your mum about this. Tell her you want to save some money for yourself because you are trying to learn how to save. If she doesn't agree, you both can agree on sharing whatever you get or tell her to get a piggy bank for you to save all the money you get. We hope this helps
I am new here,I've replied to some comments and I've also shared my own story about hair actually but I haven't get any Reply😥😥😥 Now when we are talking of saving I know how to save my money well in fact it is now part of me if I go to school I don't normally feel like buying something coz I feel it is not necessary even if am hungry I will wait until we close coz I know food is waiting for me at home Now the problem I have is that after saving my money without spending a penny I realize that once I've come to the end of that saving I just spend the money uselessly on unreasonable things after I've bought those things and spent all the money that is when I will realize that I want to buy a reasonable things big sis,pls how can I solve this?how can I learn to spend my money wisely???

Hey Sunny08! Welcome to Springster. Saving is a skill and we are glad you do not have a problem with saving. Now, what you need to do is to have a plan for saving - save towards something e.g a phone, a new shoe, a book, a gift for a friend etc. This way, you do not spend 'recklessly' at the end. We know that sometimes, you may not have a plan when you start saving but you can actually come up with a plan when you start the saving (way before it ends). Ask yourself questions like what do i really need? Of what use is this thing to me? Can I survive without this thing? etc. Be very critical and do not be bias. Also, it is okay to save and spend on yourself because you deserve it so do not always feel guilty after saving after all you deserve to spoil yourself. We hope this helps

Hey Springster! Thanks for the comment. You can save in a piggy bank. Keep it private and in a safe place. This way, no one knows about it and you also cannot have access to the money until you break it. We hope this helps

Big sister I always earn #200 every school day in which #100 naira is meant 4 my transportation and the remaining #100 is meant 4 lunch The money isn't really enough 4 me but my mum won't add more 2 it so how do u advice I save from it

Hey Cynthie! Thanks for the comment. You do not have to beat yourself about it. You can choose certain days that you will save a certain amount. This can be #10 or #20 depending on what you can spare.Even if it is 3 times a week. It is better than not doing anything at all. We hope this helps

Hey Twinkle! We advise that you split your savings into 2. Save some for emergencies and also another for the saving project you have in mind. You also need to be sure that these situations are really urgent and pressing. Also, you need to have a plan for the savings. Is it for a new dress, for end of the year celebration, a new phone or a gift for your friend? When you can define what you are saving for, you will save with more clarity and direction.
