Friendships can grow closer — and more distant — without breaking apart
Change is part of life. We change almost every day. It is all part of being a human being.
But what if our friendships change?
It can happen as we grow-up. And it can suck! One day, we can be with our besties 24/7. The next day, poof, everyone is off doing new and exciting stuff on their own.
Zainab has moved to a new school. Yetunde is focused on her sewing training. Chioma has moved to Lagos with her parents.
It seems like everyone is moving on and totally over the friendship. This can make us feel a bit jealous and sad. And that’s totally OK. It’s how we handle the feeling that is important.
Friendships are great because they are like rubber bands, they can stretch really far without breaking. We might feel like we’ve lost them for good. But the great thing about friendship is that they can grow strong again. Nothing is over permanently!
Instead of worrying about the state of the friendship, we can try to explore some interests of our own. Figure out who we are! It is a big world, and we are just getting started. We’ll be surprised at all the people we can meet along the way. And the new experiences we’ll have.
We can also check in on our friends! Find out what they’ve been up to. Talk to them about what we have been doing. This way we would find out that our friends are still the same. They’ve just been discovering themselves. Our friendship will be even stronger.
