How is it down there?

Girls are more prone to infections than boys. It’s the way our bodies are.
So we need to keep an eye on what’s happening. Especially around our vagina. It’s important to know what is normal. And what isn’t.

Below are important things you should know

Vaginal Discharge
The milky or yellow stain we sometimes see on our pants is called vaginal discharge. It is normal. It helps clean the vagina. Our discharge should not be green, or brown If yours is, please report it right away to a trusted adult or medical professional.

Itching and Burning sensation
Is your vagina itchy? Does it hurt around your vagina? Do you have a burning sensation when you urinate? This is not normal. This might be a sign of infection. You need to seek medical help. Talk to a trusted adult right away.

Bad Vagina Smell
Yes our vagina has its own smell. That is perfectly normal. But it shouldn’t smell foul or fishy. If you perceive a strong odour, it’s time to check things out. Talk to a trusted adult.

Wondering how to keep clean down there? Here are some tips:

  • The best way to wash is with water. You can also use a mild soap.
  • After using the toilet, wipe from front to back. This stops bacteria from getting into the vagina and causing an infection.
  • Wear cotton pants. Avoid pants or trousers that are too tight.
  • Sitting directly on a public toilet is a NO! NO!
